Jennifer Healey Biography

Jennifer Healey envisions a future in which computers and cellphones are capable of sensing human emotions, and automobiles are able to communicate with one another, preventing accidents. She works as a scientist at Intel Corporation Research Labs, where she studies the technologies and systems that will enable these big breakthroughs. Healey has a Ph.D. in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT. While there, she and Rosalind Picard pioneered "Affective Computing," creating the first wearable computer with physiological sensors and a video camera that allows the wearer to track their everyday activities as well as how they feel while performing them. She then went to IBM to work on the next generation of multi-modal interactive cellphones, where she helped design the Interaction Mark-Up language, which allows users to smoothly switch from voice to speech input. Healey has also put her knowledge in embedded technologies to good use in the medical realm. She focused on novel techniques to utilize heart rate to predict cardiac health while an instructor at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She went on to work for HP Study in Cambridge, where she continued her research on wearable sensors for health monitoring, then she went on to work for Intel Digital Health, where she continued her research.
