Jeffrey Masson Biography

Jeffrey Masson was a Professor of Sanskrit at the University of Toronto until 1970 when he decided to apply for training as a psychoanalyst. In 1978 he graduated from the Toronto Psychoanalytic Institute as a Freudian analyst and moved to California with the intention of setting up his own psychoanalytic practice. Instead Masson went to Munich to learn to speak German and do research on the originator of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud. Masson began to enjoy real success as a writer with his books about animals. His best-selling book When Elephants Weep: The Emotional Lives of Animals written with Susan McCarthy has been translated into 20 languages and sold nearly half a million copies in the United States alone. His other books include: Assault on Truth My Father's Guru Final Analysis The Pig Who Sang to the Moon The Emperor's Embrace and Dogs Never Lie About Love: The Emotional World of Dogs among others. He is currently working on writing Raising the Peaceable Kingdom and Jeffrey Masson's Very Personal Encyclopedia of Animals about his 200 favorite animals. After stints in Boston and London the Massons moved to New Zealand in September of 2000. Jeff is currently living on a beach with his wife Leila a pediatrician from Berlin his sons Ilan and Manu and three cats a dog two rats a hen a rooster and a rabbit.
