Jay Coen Gilbert Biography

Imperative 21 is a business-driven network led by Jay Coen Gilbert, who is of the opinion that the imperative of the twenty-first century is to RESET our economic system so that it serves to produce shared wellbeing on a healthy planet. Jay's background as a co-founder of B Lab, the organization responsible for the worldwide B Corporation movement, is included in Imperative 21. Jay is the winner of the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship and the McNulty Prize at the Aspen Institute, where he is a Henry Crown Fellow, together with his B Lab cofounders. Jay has prioritized his own learning and UNlearning journey while co-convening multiracial and white caucus spaces and formats like WMRJ (White Men for Racial Justice) and AWARE (Allies Whites Against Racism for Equity), both of which are meant to support white people in joining peer-led communities of learning and practice to develop racial literacy, stamina, and communication skills, as well as a commitment to dismantling racism in society. Jay co-founded and sold AND1, a $250M basketball footwear, clothing, and entertainment firm, before co-founding B Lab (despite not having a game). In addition, he has experience working with nonprofit and public sector organizations as well as McKinsey & Co. Jay was born and raised in New York City, and although he earned an East Asian Studies degree from Stanford University, co-teaching a class at the 200-year-old Quaker Westtown School about the function of business in society for the past 10 years has been his most fulfilling educational experience. Between AND1 and B Lab, Jay took a vacation with his yogini wife Randi and their two grown children, Dex and Ria, who are now 22 and 21, to Australia, New Zealand, and Monteverde, Costa Rica.
