Javier Colon Biography

Javier Colon is an American singer and songwriter from Hartford, Connecticut, who was born on April 29, 1978. His musical style has been described as acoustic soul. Before going solo, he was a member of EmcQ and The Derek Trucks Band, and he collaborated with a variety of performers. He was contracted to Capitol Records as artist Javier from 2002 until 2006. The deal was eventually canceled in 2006, and Javier Colon became a solo artist with his own label, Javier Colon Music. In 2011, he won the first season of NBC's The Voice, winning $100,000 and securing a recording contract with Universal Republic Records. In the end, Javier Colon opted to leave the Universal Republic. Colon, the son of a Dominican father and a Puerto Rican mother, was born in Stratford, Connecticut. His father was a DJ at a local radio station. He began creating songs while attending Frank Scott Bunnell High School in Stratford, Connecticut. He then went on to the University of Hartford's Hartt School of Music to obtain a degree in music education. Javier also worked as a vocalist and drummer with EmcQ, a soul/funk band founded by lead guitarist Ian McHugh and devoted mostly to Stevie Wonder's legacy. The guitarist for the soul-jazz trio Soulive, Eric Krasno, was intrigued by Javier's singing and referred him to his friend Derek Trucks, who was seeking for a lead vocalist for The Derek Trucks Band. Javier joined the band in August 2000, following his college graduation and a successful audition in July 2000. After nearly two years on the road with the band, Javier, then 24 years old, quit in April 2002 to pursue a solo career after signing with Capitol Records. He went on to record two albums for Capitol Records, the first of which was titled Javier and was released in 2003, and the second of which was titled Left of Center and was released in 2006.
