James Frey Biography

James Christopher Frey (born September 12 1969) is an American writer and a self-described former alcoholic drug addict and convicted criminal. In late 2005 and early 2006 The Smoking Gun and other investigators discovered that critical elements of his bestselling memoir A Million Little Pieces were untrue. Frey started writing A Million Little Pieces in the spring of 1996. Although he had access to his family's fortune he took a second mortgage on his house and saved enough money so he would not have to work for twelve months while he focused on completing his book. A Million Little Pieces was allegedly turned down by 17 publishers when it was originally shopped around as a fictional novel. According to a February 2003 New York Observer story by Joe Hagan Frey originally tried to sell the book as a fictional work to Nan Talese's boutique imprint Doubleday but the imprint declined to publish it as such. A retooled manuscript presumably with all the non-factual materials excised was published as a memoir in April 2003 amidst a major publicity campaign. In 2004 Frey wrote My Friend Leonard which continues where A Million Little Pieces left off and centers on the father-son relationship Frey and his friend from Hazelden a mobster named Leonard shared. My Friend Leonard was published in June of 2005 and became a bestseller. It has since been revealed that despite My Friend Leonard's categorization as non-fiction the book begins with Frey's sentence in prison which never occurred.
