James Boyle Biography

James Boyle is the William Neal Reynolds Professor of Law at Duke Law School the Chairman of the Creative Commons Board and Founder of the Center for the Study of the Public Domain. He is also a Co-Founder of Science Commons which attempts to break down barriers to the flow of scientific data and of ccLearn which promotes access to Open Educational Resources worldwide. In 1996 James published “Shamans Software and Spleens” which argued that the politics of the information age were likely to undervalue the importance of the public domain. Since then his research has elaborated on that point in fields ranging from music and software to film and synthetic biology. In 2003 James won the World Technology Network Award for Law. His recent books include “Bound By Law” a comic book about intellectual property; and “The Public Domain” which will be published this autumn by Yale University Press.
