J. Richard Hackman Biography

Harvard University's Edgar Pierce Professor of Social and Organizational Psychology is Richard Hackman. He formerly taught for 20 years at Yale University. Hackman teaches and conducts research in social and organizational psychology on a wide range of subjects, including team dynamics and performance, leadership effectiveness, and the creation of self-managing teams and organizations. He has written or cowritten a number of articles and books, including Senior Leadership Teams: What It Takes to Make Them Great (Harvard Business Review Press, 2008) with Ruth Wageman, Debra A. Nunes, and James A. Burruss. Leading Teams: Setting the Stage for Great Performances (Harvard Business Review Press, 2002) earned the George R. Terry Award for the best management book of the year in 2004 from the Academy of Management. He has won the American Psychological Association's division on industrial and organizational psychology's Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award, as well as the Academy of Management's Distinguished Educator Award and Distinguished Scholar Award. He is a member of the United States Intelligence Science Board and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra's board of trustees. Hackman graduated from MacMurray College with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and from the University of Illinois with a PhD in social psychology.
