J. Drew Lanham is an acclaimed American ornithologist, naturalist, author, poet, and conservationist. Raised in the rural South, he developed a deep connection to his family's land and wildlife. He earned a B.A., M.S., and Ph.D. in zoology and forest resources from Clemson University, where he now serves as Alumni Distinguished Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Master Teacher.
Lanham's research examines the impacts of forest management on birds and wildlife, while his writing bridges science, culture, and race in conservation. His memoir “The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair with Nature” (2016) won the Reed Award, Southern Book Prize, and was a John Burroughs Medal finalist.
