About Iron Maiden
Iron Maiden Biography
Iron Maiden, named after a medieval torture device, was one of England's late-Seventies heavy-metal bands, with basic guitar riffs, bone-crunching chords, and screaming vocals. Iron Maiden, founded in 1976 by bassist Steve Harris (born March 12, 1957 in London) and guitarist Dave Murray (born December 23, 1958 in London), has had a revolving-door roster of musicians. The band's original iteration was influenced by the DIY punk mentality, and the group issued an EP, The Soundhouse Tapes, on its own label, Rock Hard Records. Iron Maiden's debut album for big label Capitol Records, Iron Maiden, was pure, unadulterated, screaming heavy metal. It charted in the top five in the United Kingdom; the following year's Killers charted at number twelve. America was slower to embrace the denim-and-leather-clad group, which distinguished itself from its peers with unusually literate songs (written by Harris) full of hellish imagery (the melting faces in Children of the Damned), themes borrowed from films (The Number of the Beast, inspired by The Omen II), and themes borrowed from ancient mythology (The Number of the Beast, inspired by The Omen II) (Flight of Icarus). Iron Maiden was one of the only bands of any genre to have a mascot, Eddie, a ten-foot decaying corpse. Despite practically little radio or MTV promotion, The Number of the Beast, with new vocalist Bruce Dickinson (b. Paul Bruce Dickinson, Aug. 7, 1958, Worksop, Eng.), topped the album chart in Britain and launched a string of seven straight platinum or gold albums in the United States. Piece of Mind, the follow-up, peaked at 14 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart in 1983, while Powerslave peaked at 21 on the Billboard 200 in 1984. Iron Maiden were heavy metal superstars by then, and their subsequent albums remained in the Top 25 of Billboard's dominant album chart for several years: Live After Death (Number 22, 1985), Somewhere In Time (Number 23, 1987), Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (Number 12, 1988), No Prayer for the Dying (Number 17, 1990), Fear of the Dark (Number 17, 1990). (Number 12, 1992). Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter, a song initially recorded by Dickinson alone for the Nightmare on Elm Street, Part 5 soundtrack, was included on No Prayer for the Dying, Maiden's final studio album to reach gold in the United States. Dickinson's solo rendition reached number one in the United Kingdom. Adrian Smith (born February 27, 1957 in London) departed the band in 1990 to establish A.S.A.P. with drummer Zak Starkey, son of Ringo Starr. Smith was succeeded by Janick Gers. Dickinson left in 1993, and was succeeded by Blaze Bayley. Iron Maiden weathered its multiple personnel changes with ease, continuing to make albums (three live CDs, as well as 1995's The X Factor and 1998's Virtual XI), but not as well as the band's early releases. Dickinson, who went on to become a top fencer and swordsman, a published author (The Adventures of Lord Iffy Boatrace), and a solo vocalist, rejoined the band in 1999, as did Smith. The resurrected, Dickinson-fronted Maiden went on to enjoy a second successful career, delivering a run of charting albums such as Brave New World (Number 39, 2000), Dance of Death (Number 18, 2003), and A Matter of Life and Death (Number 18, 2003). (Number 9, 2006). Ed Hunter, the band's three-disc greatest-hits album released in 1999, generated a computer game of the same name.
