Hieroglyphics, commonly known as The Hieroglyphics Crew and Hiero, is an Oakland, California-based underground hip hop collective. Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, a rapper, established the collective in the early 1990s. Rappers from Souls of Mischief, including A-Plus, Tajai, Opio, and Phesto Dee, as well as Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Casual, and Pep Love, make up the group. Domino is their in-house producer, with A Plus assisting with production chores on occasion. Hieroglyphics has two albums out, 3rd Eye Vision (1998) and Full Circle (2003), and are reported to be working on a third. They've also been on several compilation albums and cooperated with artists such as Planet Asia and 9th Wonder. Del was almost ready to release his Future Development CD in 1996. However, Del was dismissed from his recording contract with Elektra Records soon before the album's release. Around the same period, Souls of Mischief, Extra Prolific, and Casual were released from their Jive Records contracts. Frustrated, Del and the other members of Hieroglyphics decided to launch their own record company, Hieroglyphics Imperium. The band has a spiritual, down-to-earth attitude and pleasant jazzy rhythms.
