Helena Sarin is a software engineer and visual artist who has always worked with cutting-edge technologies. First at Bell Labs, building commercial communication systems, and then as an independent consultant for the last few years, developing computer vision software utilizing deep learning. While she has always worked in technology, she has also dabbled in the applied arts such as fashion, food and beverage styling, and photography. However, in her life, art and software traveled parallel tracks. Except for a few forays into generative art with Processing and computational photography, everything of her work had been analog... until she found GANs (Generative Adversarial Networks). Working with generative models has proven to be both hard and thrilling for her. With GANs, there is the thrill of discovering new models and datasets. Unlike any other digital instrument, there is an element of surprise. There is an element of unpredictability that stimulates, unblocks, and produces something unique – something that goes well beyond Instagram/ Photoshop effects or conventional style transfer. She just established Neural Bricolage Studio to explain, promote, and exhibit AI-assisted artwork. Her AI artwork has appeared in a number of publications, most notably in BBC Futures: The A-Z of How Artificial Intelligence is Changing the World. I, I am for... creativity!
