Heather Whitestone McCallum Biography

Heather Leigh Whitestone McCallum (born February 24, 1973, in Dothan, Alabama) was the first deaf Miss America winner, having lost most of her hearing at the age of 18 months. Heather discovered about Helen Keller, a young lady from Alabama who would permanently impact her life when she was in fourth grade. Keller became a role model for her. She couldn't keep up with her schoolwork and began to slip behind her classmates. She requested that her family enroll her in a special school where she could catch up with her classmates. She learned two grade levels every year at the Central Institute for the Deaf in St. Louis, Missouri. She caught up with her friends after three years and returned to Alabama to graduate with a 3.6-grade point average from a public high school (GPA). Following her parents' divorce, she went to Birmingham at the age of sixteen. She spent a year at the Alabama School of Fine Arts before graduating in 1991 from Berry High School (now Hoover High School). Her love was dance, and she had spent most of her time honing her dancing talents due to her deafness. She subsequently moved on to Jacksonville State University to further her education.
