Harvey Mansfield Biography
Harvey Mansfield is known for his traditional stance on political issues in his writings as well as being an author, professor and political philosopher. At Harvard, he is the William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Government. Harvey Mansfield Sr., who was his father, was the Ruggles Professor Emeritus of Public Law and Government at Columbia University. His father died in the year 1988. Mansfield enrolled at Harvard in 1949 as a student and has been there ever since. He joined the faculty in 1962, received his B.A. at Harvard in 1953, served in the United States Army, and also received his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1961. Harvey Mansfield has been teaching and writing about political philosophy for more than forty years. His articles and political analysis appear in periodicals such as the Weekly Standard, the New Republic, the National Review, the Wall Street Journal, etc. Mansfield has written and worked on about fifteen books so far. Mansfield tries to find answers and solutions to leading political problems of today by inspecting both contemporary politics and tracing their historical origins. He has written on popular people like Edmund Burke and the nature of political parties, Machiavelli and the invention of indirect government, in defense of a defensible liberalism and in favor of a Constitutional American political science. He has translated about three books of Machiavelli’s and Tocqueville's Democracy in America. From 1973-1977, he was Chairman of the Government Department at Harvard, held NEH and Guggenheim Fellowships, and has been a Fellow at the National Humanities Center. For his outstanding teaching at Harvard, He was awarded the Joseph R. Levenson award, received the Sidney Hook Memorial award from the National Association of Scholars, and accepted a National Humanities Medal from the President in 2004. In 2007, Mansfield gave the 36th Jefferson Lecture for the National Endowment for the Humanities and in 2011, he became the beneficiary of the Bradley Prize.
