Richard Milner IV is a Cornelius Vanderbilt Distinguished Professor of Education in the Vanderbilt Peabody College of Education and Human Development's Department of Teaching and Learning. He also has adjunct positions at Peabody's Department of Leadership, Policy, and Organizations and Vanderbilt's Department of Sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences. Milner is an urban education and teacher education researcher, scholar, and leader. He has spent hundreds of hours studying teachers' practices and interviewing educators and kids in urban schools on micro-level policies that affect students' possibilities to learn, with a focus on equality and diversity. He investigates the social backdrop of classrooms and schools, as well as how teachers' conversations (especially regarding race) impact student learning, identity, and growth. His work in urban schools, as well as his book "'These Kids Are Out of Control:' Why We Must Reimagine Classroom Management" (Corwin Press, 2018), has affected the design and practices of teacher education courses and programs.
