Graydon Carter Biography

Graydon Carter has been editor of Vanity Fair since July 1992. A former staff writer for Time and Life he co-founded Spy magazine and served as the editor of the New York Observer. Carter has been named Advertising Age’s editor of the year and is the first editor ever to be twice named Adweek magazine’s editor of the year. The author of What We’ve Lost (2004) he has edited nine Vanity Fair collections. He was a producer of the Broadway play I’ll Eat You Last (2013) and of documentaries including Public Speaking (2010) directed by Martin Scorsese the Emmy-nominated His Way (2011) and The Kid Stays in the Picture (2002). He won Emmy and Peabody awards for the 2002 documentary 9/11 about the World Trade Center attacks which aired on CBS. In 2014 Carter was inducted into the American Society of Magazine Editors’ Hall of Fame.
