Glenn Allen Youngkin was born on December 9, 1966, and is a United States businessman and political leader presently serving as Virginia's 74th governor since January 15, 2022. A Republican Party member, Youngkin overcame former Democratic governor Terry McAuliffe in the 2021 Virginia gubernatorial race. Before entering public service, he worked for 25 years at the private investment company, the Carlyle Group, where he ascended to co-CEO in 2018. He stepped down from this role in 2020 to pursue the governorship. As governor, Youngkin has heavily emphasized cultural conflict issues related to race and gender identity in public schooling. On his initial day in office, he enacted an executive directive that terminated various racial equality initiatives in Virginia public schools. This directive also prohibited discussion within the state's educational system of any notions, such as critical race theory (CRT), that his administration has considered divisive; this prohibition had a minimal effect because the Virginia Department of Education has not endorsed CRT nor incorporated it into the state's public school curriculum. Later during his term, Youngkin approved one of the nation's initial statewide laws permitting school parents to exclude their children from educational content deemed sexually explicit.
