About George Allen
George Allen Biography
George Allen is fond of describing how his parents were the two most influential people in his life. His mother grew lived in Tunisia during WWII, when she witnessed the harsh and terrible Axis occupation. His mother taught him about the notion and benefits of freedom. It is a notion that will influence his life and inform his political philosophy and views. Allen began his legal career as a law clerk for well-known conservative Judge Glen M. Williams in Southwest Virginia. His reverence for the rule of law is still influenced by the teachings he received from Judge Williams and the time he spent in Abingdon. Allen, a self-described “Common Sense Jeffersonian Conservative,” held Thomas Jefferson's seat in the Virginia General Assembly. As Governor, he put many of the ideas and principles he developed while serving in Mr. Jefferson's seat into action. After being sworn in as Governor in 1994, Allen set out to implement broad reforms that would position Virginia as a national example for economic development, public safety, educational accountability, welfare reform, and innovative governance. He pushed back against critics and sentiment that said it couldn't be done, reigning down government expenditures and significantly decreasing the size of the state staff. And he was able to complete his reform program with bipartisan backing. Allen was elected to the United States Senate in 2000 and has continued to work for Virginia families. He pushed for tax cuts in 2001 and 2003, which increased chances for job creation, and he founded the Competitive Caucus to retain America as the “world center of innovation.” Allen was one of roughly a dozen Senators who opposed the Bridge to Nowhere. He worked to make Congress live like a family – within its means – by initiating and campaigning for genuine budget reform, such as a balanced budget amendment, line item veto, and a pay penalty for Members of Congress who fail to approve appropriations bills on time. Allen has continued to campaign for the causes and ideals he has always battled for since leaving the United States Senate. He founded the American Energy Freedom Center, whose purpose is to promote more freedom, opportunity, and competitiveness in the development and utilization of America's tremendous energy resources. Allen also works with the Young America's Foundation as the Reagan Ranch Presidential Scholar. When Governor Reagan invited Allen to lead Young Virginians for Reagan in 1976, one of Allen's other political inspirations, Ronald Reagan, may be attributed with getting him engaged in politics. Allen's life has always revolved on football. And he witnessed that as a child while watching his father train. He played it at the University of Virginia, where he earned a “distinguished” degree in History as well as a legal degree. Allen is a big believer in the meritocracy of athletics, which rewards earned achievement, collaboration, preparation, competitiveness, persistence, inventive leadership, and hard work – and demonstrates how our government can emulate some of these ideas and traits. In his recently published book, What Washington May Learn from the World of Sports, he proposes ideas that can be implemented to put individuals across America in a position to compete and achieve in attaining their goals.
