Gavin Yamey Biography

The Center for Policy Impact in Global Health, housed at DGHI, is directed by Gavin Yamey, MD, MPH, MA. The Center is a cutting-edge policy lab that tackles important issues in global health funding and delivery. At Oxford University and University College London, he studied clinical medicine, medical journalism, and editing at the BMJ, and public health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He was a founding Senior Editor of PLOS Medicine and the Principal Investigator on a $1.1 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to assist the development of PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases. He received a Kaiser Family Mini-Media Fellowship in Global Health Reporting in 2009 to investigate the challenges of scaling up low-cost, low-tech health instruments in Sudan, Uganda, and Kenya. Dr. Yamey now serves on the Lancet Commission on Tuberculosis as a commissioner. He has served on the Lancet Commission on Investing in Health and the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery, both of which are international health commissions. He has served as an external advisor to the WHO and TDR, the Special Program for Tropical Disease Research and Training. Dr. Yamey is a regular contributor on National Public Radio and has published extensively on global health, neglected illnesses, health policy, and health inequalities. In Geneva, he heads Duke's Program on Global Policy and Governance's Global Health Track. Dr. Yamey was an Associate Professor of Epidemiology & Biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine before joining Duke. He led the Evidence-to-Policy Initiative in the Global Health Group at UCSF and was an Associate Professor of Epidemiology & Biostatistics at the UCSF School of Medicine.
