Gary Morsch, M.D., M.P.H., has received Olivet's Reed Leadership Award for 2012. Dr. Morsch, a man of action and a servant of Jesus Christ, leads a worldwide ministry, has served in clinics and hospitals all over the world, and once led a motorcycle trip from the southern point of South America to Kansas City in order to collect $500,000 for charity. “We celebrate Dr. Morsch today for his life of service and mobilization of individuals to make a difference in our world,” said University President Dr. John C. Bowling as he delivered the award. “Leaders are people with a proclivity for action, and Dr. Morsch certainly embodies that.” Dr. Harold W. Reed, president of Olivet from 1949 to 1975, founded the Reed Leadership Award and the Reed Institute for Advanced Study of Leadership. Dr. Morsch's medical profession and voluntary medical missions work lead him to create two successful charity organizations: • Heart to Heart International, one of the world's largest volunteer relief groups and the third most efficient charity in the US. This medical aid organization conducts airlifts of medications and medical supplies to impoverished nations, responds to calamities, and organizes volunteer medical teams that serve all over the world. • Docs Who Care, which provides health care in rural parts of the United States. Doctors volunteer to serve at community hospitals on a job-sharing basis, giving up their time and flexibility to make a difference in the world. On October 31, during Olivet's morning chapel service, Dr. Morsch told students, professors, and staff about meeting Mother Teresa in 1987 in Calcutta, India, and working with her for the next ten years. “When I initially arrived in Calcutta, Mother Teresa assigned me to shovel rubbish into buckets and then take the buckets to a dump site,” he explained. He discovered the reality of one of her lessons while performing that task: "We can achieve no big things, only modest things with tremendous love." Dr. Morsch described the outcomes of a challenge he issued to his Rotary Club in Olathe, Kan., in 1991. “I told them we needed to love our adversaries and that we should go to Moscow, Russia, to do so,” he explained. Finally, they collected 90 tons of medications to assist the people of a country on the edge of collapse. To transfer the contributions, the United States Air Force supplied a military cargo jet. That marked the start of Heart to Heart International. “God has been communicating to me about how to combine leadership with service,” Taylor Haymes, a senior elementary teaching student from Wentzville, Missouri, said. “Dr. Morsch did it in his presentation for me.”
