Fred Jansen Biography

Fred Jansen is an empathic manager able to see the big picture in large complex technical/scientific projects seeking to maximize the involvement and professional pride and joy of those working on these projects.
Fred Jansen managed the European Space Agency’s Rosetta mission which guided a probe into orbit around a comet and dispatched a lander to its surface -- both firsts in space exploration. He served in this role until 2015 managing the hibernation exit comet approach landing and post-landing operations periods. The data gathered immeasurably multiplied our knowledge of comets and their contributions to the ingredients of life on Earth.
Jansen joined the European Space Agency in 1995 and was appointed project scientist for XMM-Newton shortly afterwards. After launch Lansen also became the mission manager for this project. Additionally following the launches of the Mars Express and Venus Express missions he became mission manager for these projects. In 2017 Lansen left XMM-Newton and currently focuses on his work as mission manager of Gaia. In overseeing these missions Jansen delves into the most elusive secrets of the universe including black holes and dark matter.
