About Frank Wilczek
Frank Wilczek Biography
Frank Wilczek has earned several awards for his contributions to physics, including the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2004 for work he completed as a doctoral student at Princeton University when he was just 21 years old. Among his many accomplishments are the discovery of asymptotic freedom, the creation of quantum chromodynamics, the invention of axions, and the investigation of new types of quantum statistics (anyons). Frank has been anthologized in the Norton Anthology of Light Verse and twice in Best American Science Writing, and he is in high demand for public talks to a wide spectrum of groups (2003, 2005). He has appeared on television as a ghostbuster for Penn and Teller (2005). Longing for the Harmonies, a magnificent explanation of contemporary physics Frank authored with his wife Betsy Devine, was selected a Notable Book of the Year by the New York Times and was just reissued in paperback. Frank is also the author of Fantastic Realities, a collection of his short essays on a variety of themes that closes with a family's-eye perspective of the Nobel experiences derived from Betsy's blog Funny Ha-Ha or Funny Peculiar. Frank's latest book, The Lightness of Being, has been described as a bright, humorous, and imaginative tour de force, as well as a colorful and skillful exposition of current discoveries in fundamental physics. The old difference between celestial Light and earthly Matter has been overcome, according to one of the book's core themes. In contemporary physics, all of the material out there is united into a Being that resembles the conventional concept of light rather than the old concept of matter. Frank was raised in Queens, New York, and attended the University of Chicago. After receiving his Ph.D. from Princeton, he worked on the faculty of the Institute for Advanced Study, as well as at UCSB's Institute for Theoretical Physics, now known as the KITP. Frank is presently the Herman Feshbach physics professor at MIT.
