About Frank Lucas

Frank Lucas Biography

Frank Lucas, played by Denzel Washington in Ridley Scott's critically acclaimed 2007 film American Gangster, is a man of many contradictions: drug kingpin and family guy, a petty criminal and corporate innovator, deadliest adversary, and life-long friend. His meteoric rise was followed by an equally meteoric collapse, and his illustrious life is now as much a cautionary tale as it is a redemption story. Frank Lucas, speaking from the platform, provides new light on his now-famous narrative and encourages listeners to think about the nature of sin... and salvation. Frank Lucas arrived in Harlem as a 16-year-old kid anxious to create a name for himself in 1946. He started robbing local pubs and jewelry stores within months. Lucas opened up the company after learning the ropes from famous Harlem criminal Ellsworth Bumpy Johnson. He planned and exploited a drugs transportation route from Southeast Asia to Harlem, New York, in the late 1960s and 1970s. Frank Lucas, who is most known for removing intermediaries from the drug trade, coordinated the transport of heroin from Vietnam through the caskets of killed American soldiers. Prosecutors in New York called his enterprise "one of the most brazen international drug smuggling organizations ever." The sky was the limit for Frank Lucas, and his potential looked limitless. Frank Lucas was arrested on January 28, 1975, for state and federal narcotics offenses in New Jersey. He was convicted and sentenced to 70 years in prison. He was freed in 1991 after 14 years in jail, thanks to his collaboration with the police, only to return to a transformed Harlem, destroyed, in part, by the negative repercussions of his legacy. Lucas, who is now wheelchair-bound, is fully aware of his influence on his cherished New York neighborhood. His goal is to change that history. To the nation's young, he is now dedicated to demonstrating, through his Frank Lucas Foundation and by extending out to as many people as possible, that redemption is possible for everyone, including that venerable, retired gangster we all despise to adore.
