Frank A. Verrastro Biography
CSIS's James R. Schlesinger Chair for Energy and Geopolitics is held by Frank Verrastro, senior vice president. He was the director of the CSIS Energy and National Security Program from 2003 until 2012. He has considerable energy expertise, having worked in the US government and the private sector for over 30 years in energy policy and project management positions. His official experience includes working in the White House and the Departments of Interior and Energy, where he held the post of deputy assistant secretary for international energy resources. In the private sector, he worked for TOSCO (previously the nation's biggest independent refiner) as director of refinery policy and crude oil planning, and most recently for Pennzoil as senior vice president. Pennzoil's objectives included domestic and international government affairs, business planning, risk assessment, and diplomatic efforts. He also served on the Executive Management and Operating Committees, as well as the Sustainability, Security, and Leadership Competency Council, for the firm. Verrastro has a B.S. in biology/chemistry from Fairfield University, a master's degree from Harvard University, and has completed the Yale University Graduate School of Business and Management's senior management program. He has spoken at Harvard's Kennedy School and served as an adjunct professor at George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs. He was a member of the Coordinating Committee for the 2012 National Petroleum Council (NPC) study, Prudent Development of North American Energy Resources, as well as the chair of the Geopolitics and Policy Task Groups for the 2007 NPC report, Hard Truths: Facing the Hard Truths about Energy, and a Task Force member for the Council on Foreign Relations report, National Security Consequences of U.S. Occupation of Iraq. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and is on the Advisory Board for the National Renewable Fuels Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado. He has produced a number of articles on energy and security issues.
