Frances Haugen, who was raised with her parents attending the Iowa caucuses, was born in Iowa City and is the daughter of two professors. Her upbringing instilled in her a strong sense of civic duty and pride in democracy. Haugen has an MBA from Harvard and an Electrical and Computer Engineering degree from Olin College.
She has worked on ranking algorithms at Google, Pinterest, Yelp, and Facebook and is an expert in algorithmic product management. She was hired by Facebook to work as the company's lead product manager on the Civic Disinformation project, which addressed problems with democracy and misinformation and eventually focused on counterespionage.
