Fountains of Wayne is a Grammy-nominated American power pop band founded in 1996 in New York City. The band initially went by the names Are You My Mother? and Woolly Mammoth before deciding on Fountains of Wayne, which was inspired by a lawn ornament business in Wayne, New Jersey. Songwriters Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood founded the band, which was subsequently joined by Jody Porter and Brian Young and produced a demo. The demo was picked up by Atlantic Records, and the band issued their debut self-titled album in 1996. Two singles were issued from it, but it was Schlesinger's song "That Thing You Do" that achieved notoriety as the title song for Tom Hanks' film of the same name. Schlesinger won an Academy Award for the song, and the soundtrack was certified gold by the RIAA. Their second album, "Utopia Parkway," was released in 1999 to mixed reviews and generated three hits; nevertheless, disagreements between the band and the label led to their dismissal by Atlantic Records. The band went on hiatus, with all of the members pursuing other musical endeavors. The band didn't reappear until 2001, with a rendition of The Kinks' "Better Things." S-Curve Records published their third album, "Welcome Interstate Managers," in 2003. The track "Stacy's Mom" was an instant hit, gaining gold certification from the RIAA. The two follow-up singles, "Mexican Wine" and "Hey Julie," were not as successful, although the song "All Kinds of Time" gained commercial exposure during NFL advertisements during the 2005 season. Because of their popularity, notably with "Stacy's Mom," the band was nominated for two Grammy Awards: Best New Artist and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals for "Stacy's Mom." In June 2005, a compilation of B-Sides titled "Out-of-State Plates" was published, and two years later, in April 2007, a new album titled "Traffic and Weather" was released. “No Better Place: Live In Chicago,” the band's debut DVD, was released in March 2009. “Sky Full of Holes,” the band's fifth studio album, was released in 2011. The album opened at number 37 on the Billboard 200 Albums list, the band's highest first-week position to date.
