Reverend Dr. Floyd H. Flake, a former U.S. Representative, is the lead pastor of the 12,000-member Allen African Methodist Episcopal Church in Jamaica, Queens, and the President of Edison Charter Schools. Allen has built one of the nation's leading Christian churches and charity organizations over his 25-year pastorate. The church's $29 million annual operating budget, extensive commercial and residential development, a 500-student private school founded by Flake and his wife Elaine, and various commercial and social service enterprises have elevated it to the ranks of the nation's most productive religious and urban development institutions. The 11 companies, church administrative offices, school, and ministries employ 825 people, making it one of the three largest private sector employers in the Borough of Queens. Edison Charter Schools, the nation's largest education firm, is a $350 million organization with a market valuation of more than $1 billion, making Flake one of America's highest-ranking African American corporate leaders. Edison runs 113 public schools around the country, either via contracts with school boards or as charters. Flake was a Representative in the United States Congress from 1986 to 1997, where he developed a reputation for nonpartisan, imaginative legislative proposals to revive urban business and residential neighborhoods. Flake also focused on bringing federal funds and projects to his neighborhood. He was awarded two regional facilities: the Federal Drug Administration (F.D.A.) and the Federal Aviation Administration (F.A.A.), which will produce over 2,000 employment while also improving the District's stability and attractiveness. He was successful in convincing the Clinton Administration to establish the nation's first One Stop Small Business Capital Center (Jamaica Business Resource Center J.B.R.C. ), which served as a model for other centers in Federal Empowerment Zones. Flake and the church have been featured on CNN, CBS, BET, C-Span, and PBS, as well as in Time, Black Enterprise, Ebony, The New York Times, and The Los Angeles Times. Reverend Flake has advocated for market-oriented community and economic development in business settings, policy forums, seminaries and divinity schools, and numerous other venues in order to broaden the circle of inclusion for more Americans. He is widely regarded as the foremost advocate for school choice among African Americans. Allen Church, led by Reverend Flake, has offered resources and direction to several faith-based and secular organisations, remaining faithful to its Christian concept of self-help and social responsibility. Its net assets are worth more than $50 million. Rev. Flake holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, OH, as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wilberforce University. He also holds honorary degrees from Boston University, Fisk University, Lincoln University, and Cheney State University. Flake is a Senior Fellow at the Manhattan Institute for Social and Economic Policy, a writer for the New York Post, a member of the Fannie Mae Foundation Board of Directors, and a member of the Brookings Institute Center for Urban and Metropolitan Policy's Advisory Board. Flake also serves on the boards of the Export-Import Bank, The Initiative for a Competitive Inner City, New York City Investment Fund Civic Capital Corporation, and Edison Schools. Rev.
