Feminista Jones Biography

Feminista Jones is a semi-retired social worker, public speaker, writer, and feminist with a base in Philadelphia. She is a renowned blogger, the author of the highly praised book Reclaiming Our Space: How Black Feminists Are Transforming the World From the Streets to the Tweets, the novel Push the Button, and the poetry collection The Secret of Sugar Water (Beacon, 2019). Her research focuses on Black American culture, intersectionality, critical race theory, and the health and wellbeing of women. She is on the boards of The Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice and the Wayfinder Foundation, grant-making organizations that support women working to improve underprivileged areas. Her writing has been featured in a number of media, including the New York Times, Washington Post, Time, Essence, XOJane, Complex, Vox, Salon, and EBONY magazine, to mention a few. She presently writes a weekly column for Zora Magazine, runs her own subscription-based platform, and works as a freelancer and contract writer for a number of publications. A number of schools and universities, including Princeton, Cornell, Columbia, Boston University, UC Berkeley, and The University of Pennsylvania, have hosted presentations and lectures by Feminista since 2013. Feminista, who is represented by APB Speakers, has spoken at a number of important conferences, including Stanford's Online Feminism Conference, Drexel's Racism in Medicine Conference, the Society for Social Work and Research Conference, and Netroots Nation, SXSW, BlogHer, Woodhull Freedom Summit, and others. She had the privilege of delivering the baccalaureate address in 2018 at Vassar College's commencement weekend. She started the #YouOKSis anti-street harassment campaign and the #NMOS14 National Moment of Silence to protest police violence in 2014. Both campaigns attracted notice from the worldwide media. She was recognized by The Root as one of the Top 100 Black Social Influencers of that year. She was a co-founder and general director of the Women's Freedom Conference in 2015, the first conference exclusively for women of color that was entirely organized online. She was selected as one of SheKnows 2015's "Voices of the Year" for her efforts. Philadelphia magazine named Feminista one of the 100 Most Influential People in Philadelphia in 2017, and Philadelphia Style magazine later highlighted her community activities in 2018. The Bitch 50 list, which recognizes the contributions of feminist women worldwide, included Feminista in 2020. Black Girl Missing is a true-crime podcast that focuses on the experiences of American Black females who have gone missing and was founded in 2019 by Feminista and two of her closest friends. Feminista is also a mother, a consultant in corporate leadership, management, culture, and diversity, a role model for young girls and women, and an outspoken supporter of the mentally ill, the homeless, and those who live in poverty.
