Eugenia Cheng Biography

Dr. Eugenia Cheng is a mathematician, educator, author, public speaker, columnist, concert pianist, and artist in addition to being a mathematician. She is the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's Scientist in Residence. She received tenure in Pure Mathematics from the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom, and she is currently an Honorary Visiting Fellow at City, University of London. She earned a Ph.D. in pure mathematics from the University of Cambridge and has previously taught at the Universities of Cambridge, Chicago, and Nice. Her goal, in addition to her Category Theory research and undergraduate teaching, is to eliminate "math fear" from the globe. How to Bake Pi, her first popular math book was released in 2015 to worldwide acclaim, including praise from the New York Times, National Geographic, and Scientific American, and she was interviewed on the BBC, NPR, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Cheng was an early YouTube math pioneer, with more than 15 million views on her videos to date. Beyond Infinity, her second popular math book was released in 2017 and was nominated for the Royal Society Insight Investment Science Book Prize 2017, and The Art of Logic was released in 2018 by Profile and Basic Books. She also contributes to the Wall Street Journal's Everyday Math column and has produced mathematical art projects for the Hotel EMC2, 6018 North, the Lubeznik Center, and the Chicago Cultural Center. She is the creator of the Liederstube, a Chicago-based personal haven for art songs. In 2020, she will release her second book, "x + y: A Mathematician's Manifesto for Rethinking Gender."
