Erika Ebbel Biography

Erika Ebbel Angle graduated from Boston University School of Medicine with a Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 2012. Her study centered on the application of cutting-edge technology to find biomarkers in Huntington's disease. She graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in chemistry and a minor in music. She worked on studies in virology, analytical chemistry, and molecular biology at MIT. She placed third in the 2000 MIT Biology Undergraduate Research Symposium and was one of the youngest poster speakers at the 48th American Society for Mass Spectrometry Conference in Long Beach, California in June 2000. She was nominated for the National Sciences Award by the United States Achievement Academy in 2003, and she has been admitted into two MIT honor organizations. She grew interested in extracting natural antiviral compounds from a plant while attending Crystal Springs Uplands Middle and High School. Her project led to her working with a number of multinational companies and institutions, and she received numerous awards, including the 3rd place Grand Award at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in 1997, 1st place national winner of the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, 1999 Intel Science Talent Search Finalist, and three-time winner of the California State Science and Engineering Fair. Erika created the organization Science from Scientists in 2002. She feels that immersing kids in hands-on projects might help to pique their interest in science. Erika decided to start a program to encourage student involvement in scientific research, science projects, and science fairs by providing support and assistance to those who are interested after learning that national math and science test scores among middle and high school students have declined in recent years. Erika was named a Woman of Worth by L'Oreal Paris in 2007 for her work with Scientists and was featured on Lifetime TV. She is the host of "The Dr. Erika Show," a children's educational science television show. Erika has served on the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women as a commissioner and is now a member of the Massachusetts Governor's STEM Council's sub-committee. Erika competed in the Miss America Scholarship Program as Miss Massachusetts in 2004. She has appeared in series such as The Secret Lives of Scientists and Engineers on Nova and TLC. She is the founder and CEO of Counterpoint Health Solutions, a biotechnology start-up focused on identifying novel early detection, disease progression, and treatment biomarkers in illnesses including Huntington's disease. From April 2002 to May 2013, she was the CEO of Science from Scientists.
