Erik Zabel won the Tour de France sprinter's green jersey for a record six consecutive years from 1996 to 2001, the Vuelta an Espana sprinter classification in 2003 and 2004, and the Classic Milan-San Remo four times. Zabel was born and raised in East Berlin.
He became a professional cyclist in 1992 for a tiny German team after achieving strong achievements as an amateur racer. He switched teams to Team Telekom in 1993. (the later T-Mobile Team). He excelled as a sprinter there.
