Emily Pilloton was dissatisfied as a young designer by the lack of meaningful employment in the design field. Even ecologically friendly design was insufficient. People were starting to talk about sustainability more in graduate school, but she felt it needed a human element, she said. Is it possible to call $5,000 bamboo coffee tables "sustainably made"? Pilloton launched Project H at the age of 26 after becoming convinced of the ability of design to transform the world. The goal was to assist build effective design solutions for those who needed them the most. The Hippo Water Roller is a rolling barrel with a handle that makes transporting water easier; AdSpecs are adjustable liquid-filled eyeglasses, and Learning Landscapes are low-cost playgrounds that combine math skills with physical activities. Pilloton and her Project H collaborator Matthew Miller began working in Bertie County, North Carolina, in February 2009, to construct a design-build curriculum for high-school students called Studio H. Bertie County is the poorest and most rural county in the state.
