Elon Musk is a South African-American entrepreneur and inventor best known for inventing SpaceX and co-founding Tesla Motors and PayPal. He was born on June 28, 1971. He directed the development of the Tesla Roadster, the first electric automobile of the contemporary age, the Falcon 9/Dragon, a private rocket and spacecraft successor to the Space Shuttle, and PayPal, the Internet payment system. He is presently the Chairman of SolarCity, the CEO and Chief Designer of SpaceX, and the CEO and Product Architect of Tesla Motors. Musk graduated from The Wharton School with a bachelor's degree in business and a second bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts and Sciences. In March 1999, Musk co-founded X.com, online financial services, and e-mail payment startup. A year later, X.com purchased Confinity, which ran an auction payment system equal in scale to X.com, particularly PayPal, in a 50/50 merger. Musk was a driving force behind the purchase, which was based on his belief in the nascent P2P (peer-to-peer) technology. Within X.com, Musk hoped the Confinity sub-brand would provide the required vehicle for incorporating and developing a person-to-person payment mechanism. Initially, the united firm was known as X.com, but in February 2001, X.com changed its legal name to PayPal Inc. Musk was a driving force behind the new PayPal's concentration on a worldwide payment system and separation from X.com's primary banking services.
