Rising: Dispatches from the New American Shore, which was a nominee for the Pulitzer Prize in General Nonfiction, and Still Lifes from a Vanishing City: Essays and Photographs from Yangon, Myanmar are both written by Elizabeth Rush. Her study investigates how humans adapt to changes imposed on them by forces that appear to be beyond their control, ranging from ecological transition to political revolution. Her work has published or will appear in a variety of publications, including the New York Times, National Geographic, the Guardian, the Atlantic, Harpers, Guernica, Granta, Orion, Creative Nonfiction, The Washington Post, Le Monde Diplomatique, and the New Republic. Antarctic Artist and Writer for the National Science Foundation in 2019. As a result, she was offered a unique invitation to join scientists from the United States and the United Kingdom onboard the R/V Nathaniel B. Palmer for a 50-day research "trip" to the Thwaites Glacier, one of the world's most isolated places. Thwaites' degradation, dubbed the "Doomsday Glacier" by the media, destabilizes the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, one of the greatest potential contributors to sea level rise. Her trip to Antarctica was funded by a National Geographic grant as well as sponsorships from Zoom audio recording equipment and Kari Traa. Rush has received many fellowships and awards, including the Howard Foundation Fellowship from Brown University, the Society for Environmental Journalism Grant, the Metcalf Institute Climate Change Adaptation Fellowship, and the National Association of Science Writers' Science in Society Award. She held the Andrew Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Humanities at Bates College from 2015 to 2017. (2015-2017). She currently teaches creative nonfiction classes at Brown University that include environmental sciences and digital technology into the humanities curriculum. Her students recently met fisherman in Narragansett Bay whose lives and livelihoods are being altered by environmental changes. Take a look at what they're up to here. She graduated from Reed College with a BA in English and Southern New Hampshire University with an MFA in Nonfiction.
