About Elephant Revival

Elephant Revival Biography

When words fail, music speaks for itself. That short phrase at the top of Elephant Revival's Facebook page comprises only five words, yet it says a lot about the band's motivation. Music brings us together in ways that no other media can. Even if we don't comprehend each other's languages, we may be touched by a rhythm or comforted by a song. The energy of five souls working as one, in harmony, generating sounds they could never generate alone, brought them together by an united feeling of purpose. Sage Cook (banjo, guitar, mandolin, tenor banjo, bass, and violin); Bridget Law (fiddle, octave fiddle); Bonnie Paine (washboard, djembe, musical saw, stompbox); Daniel Rodriguez (guitar, banjo, bass); and Dango Rose (guitar, banjo, bass) are the five souls in Elephant Revival (double-bass, mandolin, banjo). They all sing together and compose songs. Paine adds beats with footstomps on plywood, her stockinged feet doing near jigs while her hands rub silver nickel on corrugated metal, covered in vintage leather gloves. This Nederland, Colorado, quintet is a sight to behold, especially when they fall into the pocket of a groove incorporating parts of gypsy, rock, Celtic, alt-country, and folk. The Indie Acoustic Project describes their music as "progressive edge." At least, that's where it put the band when it named their Ruff Shod/Nettwerk Records release, Break In The Clouds, the greatest CD of 2011. It's as good a name as any to communicate their purpose, which Rose describes as "closing the gap of separation between us via the everlasting celebration of song and dance." Elephant Revival also shares a dedication to responsible management of the world and its people, collaborating with groups such as the Conscious Alliance, Calling All Crows, Trees Water & People, and other humanitarian charities. Their name was inspired by a pair of zoo pachyderms that died on the same day after being separated for 16 years. That heartbreaking narrative was told by the band during their April 2012 premiere on fellow Coloradoan Nick Forster's internationally syndicated eTown radio program, which, like Elephant Revival, is a combination of music and social conscience. One music blogger was inspired to write, "Elephant Revival serenaded the crowd with arabesque melodies, harmonies, and rhythms that braided and coiled into a magnificent auditory tapestry," while sitting in the audience during their performance. Their instrumental dynamics, poetry, and even the horrific narrative that inspired their moniker all alluded to Mother Earth's majesty, mystery, and sadness. The organizers of the Campout for the Cause festival phrased it this way on their Facebook page. We like Elephant Revival, they wrote, not just for their amazing music and aware lyrics, but also for their dedication to living up to the standards they set and setting positive examples. It's a paradigm worth spreading, and Elephant Revival members want to keep doing so as they travel the world with their music, speaking one song at a time.
