Edward Walters Biography

Ed Walters is the President and co-founder of Fastcase, a Washington, D.C.-based legal software and publishing firm. Fastcase has evolved to become one of the world's leading legal publishers under Ed's guidance, with more than 900,000 subscribers worldwide. He teaches The Law of Robots, a class exploring the boundaries of law and technology, and The Law of Autonomous Vehicles as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center and Cornell Tech. Ed worked at Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C., and Brussels, advising Microsoft, Merck, SmithKline, the Business Software Alliance, the National Football League, and the National Hockey League before launching Fastcase. His career centered on intellectual property litigation and business consultancy work for software firms and sports organizations. From 1991 to 1993, he served in the White House's Office of Media Affairs and the Office of Presidential Speechwriting. Ed graduated from Georgetown University with a B.A. in government and a J.D. from the University of Chicago. He is a member of the Virginia State Bar and the District of Columbia Bar, and he is admitted to practice in the United States Supreme Court as well as the Fourth and Fifth Circuits of the United States Courts of Appeals. Pro Bono Net, Friends of Telecom Without Borders, and Public.Resource.org are all on his board of directors. He is the editor and author of Data-Driven Law: Data Analytics and the New Legal Services, and he is on the Editorial Board of RAIL: The Journal of Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, and Law (Taylor & Francis 2018).
