Dr. William G. Kaelin Jr. Biography
Professor William G. Kaelin Jr. works at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated from Duke University School of Medicine in 1982 and worked as an internal medicine house officer at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He went on to become a medical oncology clinical fellow at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. David Livingston's laboratory, where he began his tumor suppressor protein research. In 1992, as a James S. McDonnell scholar, he became an independent investigator at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and in 1998, he became a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. Dr. Kaelin is also a professor of medicine at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital, a senior physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center's associate director for basic research. Dr. Kaelin's research has centered on tumor suppressor genes and the normal activities of the proteins that they encode. His work has a long-term objective of laying the groundwork for novel anticancer treatments based on the activities of particular tumor suppressor proteins. His research on tumor suppressor genes associated with hereditary malignancies has revealed molecular pathways that are essential in non-hereditary cancers, hastening the development of novel kidney cancer therapies. Dr. Kaelin is a member of the Institute of Medicine and has served on a variety of organizations and committees, including the Board of Directors of the American Association for Cancer Research and the National Cancer Institute's Board of Scientific Advisors. He has won several honors for his work, including the AACR-Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Prize for Cancer Research and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's Paul Marks Prize for Cancer Research. Dr. Kaelin was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2019 for a breakthrough in understanding how people respond to oxygen.
