Dr. Simon Adams Biography

The Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect's Executive Director is Dr. Simon Adams. Dr. Adams has considerable experience working with governments and civil society groups in South Africa, East Timor, Rwanda, Mozambique, and other countries. Between 1994 and 2002, Dr. Adams supported the Northern Ireland peace process by working with Sinn Féin and former IRA detainees. He was also a member of the African National Congress and a former anti-apartheid campaigner. Dr. Adams has published four books and several scholarly articles on international warfare. He has also contributed to the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Australian, Huffington Post, International Herald Tribune, News24 (South Africa), O Estado de S. Paulo (Brazil), Los Angeles Times, and a number of other media. Dr. Adams has been on Al-Jazeera, BBC, ARD (Germany), Chinese Central Television, and other news outlets as an expert commentator. Dr. Adams earned his Ph.D. from the University of New South Wales in Australia after studying at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa. He also holds a Harvard Business School Executive Leadership Program diploma. Dr. Adams has given talks at a number of universities throughout the world. Between 2008 to 2010, he was Vice President of Monash Institution's South African campus and Pro Vice-Chancellor (International Engagement) at Australia's biggest public university. Dr. Adams now serves on the board of Catalpa International, an East Timorese non-profit organization dedicated to information technology and development. He is Vice Chairman of Skateistan Global's International Advisory Board, an award-winning non-profit devoted to exposing Afghan, Cambodian, and South African youth to educational and leadership development opportunities via skateboarding. Dr. Adams also serves on the board of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, the world's largest professional organization dedicated to the advancement of international education.
