Williams served as the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury, Metropolitan of the Province of Canterbury, and Primate of All England from December 2002 to December 2012, having previously served as Bishop of Monmouth and Archbishop of Wales, making him the first Archbishop of Canterbury appointed from outside the Church of England in modern times.
Williams spent most of his early career as a professor at the universities of Cambridge and Oxford, which he attended in that order. He can communicate in three languages and read in at least nine more. He has since labeled his spoken German as a mess and claimed to be a poor Russian reader and writer.
