Dr. Rowan Williams Biography

Williams served as the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury, Metropolitan of the Province of Canterbury, and Primate of All England from December 2002 to December 2012, having previously served as Bishop of Monmouth and Archbishop of Wales, making him the first Archbishop of Canterbury appointed from outside the Church of England in modern times. Williams spent most of his early career as a professor at the universities of Cambridge and Oxford, which he attended in that order. He can communicate in three languages and read in at least nine more. He has since labeled his spoken German as a mess and claimed to be a poor Russian reader and writer. The Anglican Communion (of which the Archbishop of Canterbury is the senior figure) was on the edge of disintegration, which Williams' supremacy was characterized by. Williams worked hard to keep everyone chatting to one other. During his tenure as Archbishop of Canterbury, notable events include the rejection of his proposed Anglican Covenant by a majority of dioceses and the failure to secure a sufficient majority for a measure allowing the appointment of women as bishops in the Church of England in the final General Synod of his tenure. Williams resigned as Archbishop of Canterbury on December 31, 2012, to become Master of Magdalene College at Cambridge University in January. He was later named Chancellor of the University of South Wales in 2013. On November 9, 2012, Justin Welby replaced him as Bishop of St Augustine, and he was enthroned in March 2013. Williams was elevated to the peerage as a Life Baron on December 26, 2012, allowing him to continue speaking in the Upper House of Parliament. He was introduced to the temporal benches of the House of Lords as Baron Williams of Oystermouth on 15 January 2013, sitting as a crossbencher, after the establishment of his title on 8 January and its gazetting on 11 January 2013.
