Dr. Mike Stroud Biography

Mike Stroud is an adventurer and a doctor. From 1979 to 1975, he worked in several NHS training positions. He worked as an NHS Registrar in Medicine from 1987 to 1989. From 1989 through 1995, he studied human performance and endurance. Later in his career, he was Chief Scientist in Physiology at the Defence Study Agency's Centre for Human Sciences, where his research focused on nutrition. He then went on to work at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust as a Senior Registrar in Gastroenterology. From 1995 until 1998, he worked at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust as a consultant gastroenterologist and senior lecturer in medicine, gastrointestinal, and nutrition. In 1985, he embarked on the Footsteps of Scott Antarctic expedition. Between 1986 and 1990, Mike performed five North Pole trips and traversed the Antarctic with Sir Ranulph Fiennes in 1992. This was the world's first unassisted crossing. Mike then led the UK team in the 1994 Marathon des Sables in the Sahara Desert, and in 1995 and 1996, he competed in the Eco-Challenge adventure event. The first unsupported, non-stop desert crossing took place in Qatar in 2002, followed by seven full marathons on seven continents in seven days with Sir Ranulph Fiennes in 2003. Mike has made several appearances on television and radio, including as an endurance expert on BBC Television's Are You Tough Enough for the SAS and as the host of the BBC's The Challenge. Mike received the Polar Medal in 1995. Mike is a Physiology Society member.
