Dr. Euan Ashley Biography

He earned a Ph.D. in molecular cardiology and a medical residency at the University of Oxford before transferring to Stanford University, where he received training in cardiology and progressive heart problems before entering the faculty in 2006. His research group focuses on the use of genetics in medicine. He was part of the team that performed the first clinical interpretation of a human genome in 2010. The Lancet study was the subject of over 300 news stories, becoming one of the most referenced pieces in clinical medicine that year, and is now on display at the Smithsonian Institution's Genome Exhibition in Washington, DC. In 2011, the researchers expanded the method to a family of four, and at Stanford Hospital, where Dr. Ashley leads the Clinical Genome Service and the Center for Inherited Cardiovascular Disease, genome sequencing is now regularly used to diagnose patients. Dr. Ashley has received the American Heart Association's National Innovation Award (AHA). He is a Principal Investigator of the Myocardial Applied Genomics Network (MAGnet), a member of the AHA Council on Functional Genomics' leadership group, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine (IOM) Roundtable on Translating Genomic-Based Research for Health. He serves on the peer review boards of the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association, as well as periodicals such as Nature, the New England Journal of Medicine, the Lancet, and the Journal of Clinical Investigation. Personalis, Inc, a Menlo Park-based genetic testing firm, is his co-founder and advisor. He attempts to comprehend American football in his leisure time, plays the saxophone in a jazz quartet, and does studies on the health advantages of single malt Scotch whiskey in his leisure moments.
