Donald Palmisano Biography

He was elected to the American Medical Association's Board of Trustees in 1996. The Pelican Newsletters, issued by the Louisiana State Medical Society, pushed for his candidacy. He was re-elected to the AMA Board of Trustees in 1999. He served as AMA's Secretary-Treasurer until being chosen President-Elect in June 2002. In 2003-2004, he was the AMA's 158th president. His time on the AMA Board of Directors concluded in June 2005, when he finished his year as immediate-past president. Dr. Palmisano is a clinical professor of surgery and a clinical professor of medical jurisprudence at Tulane University School of Medicine, and he was President of the Tulane Surgical Society in 2000. In addition, he was named Adjunct Professor in the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine's Department of Health Systems Management in 2005. He was elected to the Tulane University Health Sciences Center Board of Governors in June 2005. He is a member of the National Patient Safety Foundation's (NPSF) Board of Directors and formerly served as Chair of the Development Committee, which is in charge of fundraising. He was appointed Chair of the Communications Program in November 2000, and he serves on the editorial board of The Journal of Patient Safety. Dr. Palmisano served as a Commissioner on the board of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) from July 1999 to December 2003 and is a member of the Annenberg Center for Health Sciences' National Advisory Council. Dr. Palmisano was elected to the board of governors of The Doctors Business, a prominent countrywide not-for-profit medical liability insurance company for physicians, in October 2004. Dr. Palmisano was included in the 2005-2006 Association Edition catalogue by Leading Authorities, Inc., North America's premier source for world-class speaking talent. Donald J. Palmisano, M.D., was awarded Recipient of the Award for the Advancement of Patient Safety by The Doctors Company in August 2005. Dr. Palmisano's published clinical study includes the first evidence that copper is a necessary nutrient for adult health. Dr. Palmisano's essay, Why Your Doctor Might Quit, is in the December 2004 issue of The Saturday Evening Post and examines the implications of the dysfunctional medical liability system. Dr. Palmisano was one of 60 American thought leaders selected by the Department of Defense to attend the Joint Civilian Orientation Conference in 2000. (JCOC 63). Dr. Palmisano was able to tour military bases of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard during this nine-day program to learn about our combat forces, their equipment and capabilities, and national security strategy. Dr. Palmisano chaired the Louisiana Medical Disclosure Panel, which was established by the Louisiana legislature, for a decade. This panel evaluates which therapeutic risks must be communicated to patients in order for them to provide informed consent. He was inducted into the Louisiana State Medical Society Hall of Fame in 2000. An editorial board of New Orleans area physicians chose him as one of the Top Doctors in New Orleans for the year 2001, and he was featured on the cover of the August 2001 edition of New Orleans Magazine. Dr. Palmisano, a recognized advocate of ethical science-based medicine and patient access to treatment, continues to be a spokesman for Medicine, doggedly pushing reform of the flawed medical liability system and other problems affecting health care delivery. On national television, he often discusses opponents of medical liability reform. He has also discussed patient privacy and medical record confidentiality on ABC's Good Morning America and NBC's Today Show. He has been highlighted as the week's newsmaker on CNN's The Capitol Gang and has been on ABC's Nightline to discuss the medical liability problem. Dr. Palmisano was the newsmaker at the National Press Club on July 9, 2003, which C-Span covered, and has appeared on numerous other televised news programs, including ABC's World News Tonight, CNN's Talk Back Live, MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews, CNN's Crossfire, ABC's Nightline, John McLaughlin's One on One, Fox News with Tony Snow, and Aaron Brown's NewsNight.
