For thirty years, starting in October 1962, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson controlled the airwaves. Doc has almost 30 recordings under his belt, ranging from big-band to jazz-fusion to classical. From Bach to ballads, his diverse abilities are shown on two critically praised Telarc CDs with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. The Very Best of Doc Severinsen features fifteen of Doc's most well-known compositions. On Telarc, he recorded Unforgettably Doc with the Cincinnati Pops, and on Amherst, he recorded Once More With Feeling, which was nominated for a Grammy. For his album of Doc Severinsen and The Tonight Show Band-Volume I, he won a Grammy Award for "Best Jazz Instrumental Performance – Big Band." Doc relocated to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, in 2006, reportedly to retire from performing. He started jamming with the great guitarist Gil Gutierrez in a few weeks. He now tours with Gil in The San Miguel Five, a quintet that performs a blend of Latin and Gypsy jazz and standards to great acclaim. Oblivion, their most recent CD, was released in January 2014. Doc plays an S.E. Shires Severinsen Destino III trumpet, which he co-designed with Steve Shires of the S.E. Shires Company in Massachusetts. The factory employs 25 artisans who are working brass players with a thorough understanding of what goes into creating outstanding brass instruments. The S.E.
