About Dick Costolo
Dick Costolo Biography
Dick Costolo, the former CEO of Twitter, was previously the company's COO. In October 2010, he succeeded Evan Williams as CEO. Costolo earned a B.S. in computer and communication sciences from the University of Michigan in 1985, where he was also a Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity brother. Costolo got into the theatre during his senior year at the University of Michigan when he started taking theatrical classes to meet the university's graduation requirements. He turned down offers from technological businesses after college and instead relocated to Chicago to engage in comedy writing. Costolo spent eight years as a senior manager in the product and technology areas of Andersen Consulting after his improv career in Chicago. In October 1996, he co-founded Burning Door Networked Media, a web design and development consulting firm that was purchased by Digital Knowledge Assets. He then co-founded and sold SpyOnIt, an online page monitoring business, in September 2000. Costolo, Eric Lunt, Steve Olechowski, and Matt Shobe launched FeedBurner, a web feed management service, in 2004. After Google acquired FeedBurner in 2007, Dick Costolo became a Google employee. Costolo began working for Google in other areas after the purchase. He departed Google in July 2009, and in September 2009, it was revealed that he would be joining Twitter as COO. Although his interim appointment as CEO in 2010 was meant to be temporary while CEO Evan Williams was on paternity leave, it turned into a permanent post. President Barack Obama named Costolo, along with Scott Charney, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing Group, and David DeWalt, President of McAfee Security, to the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee in May 2011. Among his many honors, Business Insider called him one of Silicon Valley's most remarkable CEOs in 2013, he was selected CEO of the Year at the Crunchies Awards in 2013, and TIME Magazine named him one of the 10 Most Influential U.S. Tech CEOs in 2013.
