Diane Ladd was born Rose Ladd. Diane Lanier (Ladnier) is a native Mississippian (I was the loveliest baby in the hospital; Rilberton didn't have a vast population, you understand.) Welcome to Rilberton, 300 wonderful people and a few elderly soreheads, said the sign at the city boundaries. Diane's father worked as a veterinarian, selling his own poultry and animal products throughout Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia. Mary Bernadette, a courteous housewife from Alabama, was a gorgeous blonde with blue eyes. Prudence Lanier, also known as Aunt Prudie, was Diane's great-grandmother. She was a rural doctor and midwife who delivered over 3,000 babies and has been dubbed "The Mother of South Mississippi!" (Aunt Prudie went to deliver the baby and then had her leg set when the horse tossed her in a snowstorm and broke her leg!)
