Denise Pope, Ph.D., is a Senior Lecturer at Stanford University's Graduate School of Education, focusing on student involvement, curricular studies, qualitative research techniques, and service-learning. Dr. Pope created and managed the SOS: Stressed-Out Students initiative from 2003 to 2008. Challenge Success is an extended version of that program. She is the co-author of Overloaded and Underprepared: Strategies for Stronger Schools and Healthy, Successful Kids, and the author of Doing School: How We Are Creating a Generation of Stressed-Out, Materialistic, and Miseducated Students, which was named a Notable Book in Education by the American School Board Journal in 2001. Dr. Pope gives talks all across the country about parenting approaches and pedagogical tactics for improving student health, learning engagement, and integrity. She has received the Stanford University School of Education Outstanding Teacher and Mentor Award three times, and the Academy of Education Arts and Sciences recognized her with the 2012 Education Professor of the Year "Educators' Voice Award." Dr. Pope formerly taught high school English in Fremont, California, as well as undergraduate composition and rhetoric classes at Santa Clara University.
