Denis Richard McDonough, born on December 2, 1969, is an American government official who currently holds the position of the eleventh United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs under President Joe Biden, a role he has held since 2021. McDonough's experience in the government sector spans several years. He previously served in the Obama administration, holding various key positions. Specifically, he served as the chief of staff at the National Security Council between 2009 and 2010 and then went on to serve as the Deputy National Security Advisor from 2010 to 2013. Following this, McDonough held the role of White House chief of staff for the entirety of President Barack Obama's second term, from 2013 to 2017. During this period, he became the second-longest-serving Democrat to occupy the position of chief of staff, with the exception of John R. Steelman in 1946. Additionally, he held this role for longer than Andrew Card, who occupied the position for 5 years and 84 days during the first and second terms of the Bush administration.
