Deer Tick Biography

Singer-songwriter and guitarist John McCauley, leads an American alt-country band from Providence, Rhode Island known as Deer Tick which originated in December 2004 as a John McCauley solo project. With the help of Brendon Massei a.k.a Viking Moses, McCauley began his touring career and by 19, he had toured across the United States extensively. He released numerous CD-Rs and three cassettes during this period, and this evolved into Deer Tick. McCauley returned to Providence after continuous touring for almost a year with a newfound confidence and a number of songs like Ashamed, Art Isn’t Real (City Of Sin) and Dirty Dishes. Pioneering indie and alt-country acts such as Uncle Tupelo, Lucinda Williams and Modest Mouse were soon compared to Deer Tick. From one show to another Deer Tick has varied in size and from its inception in 2004 through mid 2007, its only had John McCauley as its official member. Between 2005 and 2007 Paul Marandola often drummed for Deer Tick and from 2006 to 2007, James Falzone played with the band as an off and on keyboardist. In the spring of 2007, Christopher Dale Ryan, Deer Tick’s bassist graduated from Providence College and became official members of Deer Tick with drummer Dennis Ryan. In August 2008 Lead guitarist Andrew Grant Tobiassen joined the band, and in August 2009 after playing with New Jersey-based act Titus Andronicus, guitarist Ian O'Neil joined the band. In early 2010, Tobiassen left the band and in the spring of 2010, Rob B. Crowell (Keyboards/Saxophone) joined the band. Musicians like Liz Izenberg, Diego Perez, Jonny Corndawg and Chris Paddock have played onstage with the band on several occasions or performed live as part of Deer Tick.
