He grew up surfing the East Coast, having been born and reared in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Dean began competing when he was 11 years old, and his first event was won on a board with more duct tape than fiberglass. He relocated to California as an amateur in 1989 and got a professional in 1990. Dean's performance at the 1990 Cold Water Classic drew glowing reviews from critics such as Derek Hynd, who compared him to "an early 1980s Elkerton" and Tom Curren. After several impressive victories on the WQS circuit, he qualified for the top WCT tour in 1996. Dean was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease, a kind of cancer, in 2001. In 2001, he established the Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation and has been an outspoken advocate for cancer awareness and research. Through annual fund-raising activities, his organization has raised well over $300,000.00. He is now referred to as the "Lance Armstrong of surfing." His battle with cancer drove an incredible comeback, and he is an inspiration to countless others. Dean has acquired the nicknames "The Dazzler" and "Jersey Devil" for his vast record of victories and his no-holds-barred surfing style.
