De Kai Biography

De Kai is a distinguished computer scientist, AI pioneer, and Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and a Distinguished Research Scholar at UC Berkeley’s International Computer Science Institute. De Kai is renowned for inventing the world’s first global-scale online language translator, laying the groundwork for Google Translate, Yahoo Translate, and Microsoft Bing Translator. He holds a PhD from UC Berkeley, an Executive MBA from Kellogg-HKUST, and a BS from UCSD. De Kai is also an advocate for AI ethics, serving as an Independent Director at The Future Society and as one of eight inaugural members of Google’s AI Ethics Council in 2019. His recent book, Raising AI: “An Essential Guide to Parenting Our Future” (2025), reframes AI as humanity’s “artificial children,” emphasizing ethical stewardship.
