David Yurman Biography

David Yurman grew up on Long Island, New York, and began his career as a designer and entrepreneur by selling little sculptures in the cafeteria of his high school. Later, when visiting his sister in Provincetown, MA, at the age of 16, he met Cuban welder and sculptor Ernesto Gonzales. David discovered an outlet and focus for his creativity in sculpture, which he would further develop as an apprentice under the mentorship of famous sculptors Jacques Lipshitz and Theodore Rozack over the next two decades (he collaborated with Picasso and Modigliani). After a year at NYU, David dropped out and hitchhiked across the country to California, where he sought refuge in Big-Sur, a beatnik artist colony. David returned to Greenwich Village in the late 1960s after a bohemian trip in California, when he began working with artist Hans Van de Bovenkamp. David met Sybil Kleinrock, a brilliant painter who, like David, had recently returned from the beatnik movement in California, in his workshop. Sybil attracted the eye of the gallery owner when wearing one of David's works to an art opening, and he asked whether it was for sale. Sybil recognized an opportunity, while David couldn't imagine duplicating anything so intimate. David and Sybil moved to the country in the early 1970s and founded Putnam Art Works. David and Sybil married in 1979 after exhibiting their ideas and paintings at different craft shows throughout the decade. The dream team pair learned the fine crafts and jewelry industry while running Putnam Art Works, establishing the basis for the establishment of David Yurman, the brand and firm, in 1980. Yurman had created a reputation for himself with his cable bracelet by the mid-1980s. This look has become legendary, and David Yurman's distinctive style. His brand has now expanded to include men's and women's jewelry and watch lines, as well as his own trademark fragrance and eyewear line.
